Over the past three years we’ve worked with multiple cities and organizations to develop a new model that brings people together to make things that improve cities.

We call this approach public design.

We defined public design as the process and product of creating with the public by the public for public good in public space.

With the public

It requires the input, feedback, and support of its target community.

By the public

It is conceived, adapted, designed, and/or fabricated completely or partially by its target community.

For public good

It explicitly addresses one or more recognized issues facing a community.

In public space

It is openly accessible to all.

The Public Design Framework

We are creating the Public Design Framework, a free and open set of resources to help move this work forward in cities everywhere.

This definition and diagram are the first pieces of the Framework and, like the other pieces, will change over time in response to public input.
